Technical Questions
Do I have to open any ports at my firewall or my router?
YourPrivateVPN works with PPTP. You router should support pptp-passthrough, to establish a connection. If you are connected through a firewall, you have to open TCP port 1723.
Is IPSec or OpenVPN supported too?
No. At present we offer exclusively PPTP. Thus YourPrivateVPN is compatible with all systems, without the need for any additional software. Nevertheless we are working to integrate more protocols, which will be available in the near future.
Can I use Skype, ICQ, ftp, mail, etc. over VPN too?
Yes. When you are connected with YourPrivateVPN, all programs on your computer, that connect to the internet, pass through our IP’s. Thus your privacy in all your communication is ensured. However for safety reasons the mails traffic is limited to 30 outgoing emails per hour. We do not want to be a platform for spammers.
Is port forwarding possible?
At the moment port forwarding is not available. We are currently studying we still examine under what circumstances we can permit port forwarding, since the abuse potential is very high. In addition, Bittorrent and Emule do the job without port forwarding.
Does VPN slow down my internet connection?
The speed of your internet connection is determined by many factors but basically by the speed, your internet provider offers you. When you choose the speed of our VPN access similar to the speed of your ISP, you will have no slow down. In contrast to proxy servers, the VPN technology we use, and our care in not overloading our servers, will give you a high-speed secure connection. But as you might know, the actual speed, you get depends on your location, because all data must be rerouted over our servers. If you are very distant from the server location, the connection might be slightly slower.
Can I use my account with several computers?
Yes. If you configure your router in such a way that it establishes the VPN connection directly, then all computers attached to it are protected. This is possible e.g. with Fritzbox or DD-WRT.
I live in china and still can't access some sites!
If you are connected through our VPN all sites should work as we don't filter or block anything. Most likely you are suffering from DNS-Poisoning. See how to solve this issue

Data Protection and Security
I have heard that PPTP is not safe, is this right?
No, all our servers are configured in such a way, that they permit only the authentication over MS-CHAPv2. The possible attack vectors with MS-CHAPv1 do not function with us. Briefly: Our PPTP servers are safe.
Couldn't my ISP intercept the connection data?
No. Not even your ISP (e.g. AT&T) is able to record visible data as all the traffic is encrypted.
Isn’t there a law in the Netherlands, that data has to be recorded?
Yes, that is correct. However it is frequently not understood who must store. Those are the internet service providers. We as VPN providers are not obliged to store any data at all. As we will have a wide choice of servers in different countries, we will be able to guarantee the anonymity of our customers under any circumstances.
What kind of data do you store?
If you order an account with us, you get the necessary login information by email. The account is automatically activated and after one month automatically deactivated, unless you choose automatic renewal A direct connection between your email and the account data does not exist. The servers are configured in such a way that they do not store IP addresses.
How do you react with abuse cases?
Our goal is to make our customers feel safe again. Therefore data, which we might be forced to hand over to authorities, is not being stored. Nevertheless we do not tolerate any abusive use of our service. Hacking, Spamming, Fakeing, Flooding etc. are strictly forbidden here. If we should get to know abusive data traffic, we reserve the right to cancel the account of anyone engaged in that.
Who is behind YourPrivateVPN?
We are a group of internet security experts with a special knowledge of the international internet security laws. Our domiciles are situated in several different countries, where the European authorities have very little access and influence.
Connecting problems
I get “error 619” or “error 645”.
I get “error 628” or “error 781”.
The connection parameters are wrong. The VPN connection must be established over PPTP and not over IPSec and/or L2TP.
I get “error 800”.
This problem is probably caused by old firmware. If you use a Cisco router from the year 2000, this problem can occur.
