Technical Questions
How does it work?
Setting up a VPN adds a new network interface that you use the same as you use your direct internet connection, except (with our VPN service) your IP is different and all traffic is encrypted.
Can I use your VPN instead of my current ISP connection?
No, you need an existing internet connection (Cable, DSL, dial up, Satellite, etc) to be able to use a VPN service.
Do I have to open any ports in my firewall or router?
YourPrivateVPN works with PPTP. You router needs to support pptp-passthrough to establish a connection. And if you are connected through a firewall, you have to open TCP port 1723.
Is IPSec or OpenVPN supported too?
No. At present we only offer PPTP. Thus YourPrivateVPN is compatible with all systems, without the need for any additional software. However, we are working to integrate more protocols which will be available in the near future.
Can I use Skype, ICQ, ftp, mail, etc. over VPN too?
Yes, yes, yes, yes, and yes. When you are connected with YourPrivateVPN, all of the programs on your computer that connect to the Internet, connect through our IP’s. Thus privacy in all of your communications is ensured.
NOTE: For safety reasons, outgoing email is limited to 30 messages per hour. This is to ensure that we do not become a platform for spammers.
Is port forwarding possible?
At the moment port forwarding is not available, since the abuse potential is very high. In addition, Bittorrent and Emule can be used without port forwarding.
Does VPN slow down my internet connection?
The speed of your internet connection is determined by many factors, but mainly by the speed of your internet service provider. If you choose the speed of our VPN access that is most similar to the speed of your ISP, you will have no slow down. In contrast to proxy servers, the VPN technology we use, and our care in not overloading our servers, will give you a secure high-speed connection. But as you might know, the actual speed you get depends on your location, because all data must be rerouted over our servers. If you are very far from the server's geographic location, the connection might be slightly slower.
Can I use my account with several devices?
Yes. With our service you can use as many different devices as you want: Computers, Smartphones, Ipads and so on. Also, installing YourPrivateVPN in routers is usually possible if the router supports "PPTP passthrough". But because there are so many router makes and models we can't offer any support for this.
I live in China and can't connect or still can't access some sites!
If you can’t connect at all, please make sure you are using our IP numbers for the server address, check your firewall, or message/email us. When you are connected through YourPrivateVPN, all sites should work, as we don't filter or block anything. If you do have a problem, most likely you are suffering from DNS-Poisoning. Data Protection and Security
What kind of encryption do you use?
All of our servers are configured in such a way, that they only permit authentication over MS-CHAPv2. Therefore, possible attack vectors with MS-CHAPv1 do not function with us.
In Short: Our PPTP servers are safe.
Can't my ISP intercept my connection data?
No. When you use our VPN service, not even your ISP (e.g. AT&T) is able to record visible data, because we encrypt all traffic.
What kind of data do you store?
When you sign-up with us, you get your login information by email, your account is automatically activated and, after your expiration date, automatically deactivated (unless you choose a subscription which gives you automatic renewal). We do store your email address (on a separate server) in a different country. We purposely make sure there is no connection between usage information and user information. The servers are configured in such a way that they do not store IP addresses.
How do you react with abuse cases?
Again, our goal is to make our customers feel safe. Therefore, data, which we might be forced to hand over to authorities, is not stored. Nevertheless, we do not tolerate any abuse of our service. Hacking, Spamming, Fakeing, Flooding, etc. are strictly forbidden. If we detect any abuse, we reserve the right to cancel the account of anyone involved.
Connecting problems
I get “error 619” or “error 645”.
Something is blocking the pptp connection. Normally this is caused by locally installed security software, like a firewall / internet security suite / antivirus with web-/ email filtering capabilities. Also, it is possible that your router/modem doesn't support pptp passthrough. Please check whether pptp passthrough is enabled in your router's interface.
I get “error 628” or “error 781”.
The connection parameters are wrong. The VPN connection must be established over PPTP and not over IPSec and/or L2TP.
I get “error 691", I can't log-in.
